Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA) recently released their 2025 North American Camping & Outdoor Hospitality Report. The report highlights significant shifts in camping trends, driven by younger generations and evolving traveler preferences.
Key Findings:
- Generational Influence: Gen Z and millennials constitute 61% of new campers, with Gen Z spending the most per day ($266), surpassing baby boomers ($134). Their spending often includes gear rentals, food, and local experiences.
- Glamping’s Rise: Glamping continues to gain popularity, attracting 34% of new campers. Nearly half of first-time glampers are millennials with higher incomes, and safety is a significant factor for many, especially among younger campers and families.
- Economic Impact: Campers spent approximately $49 billion in local communities, with an average daily spend of $156 per person. Glampers and families tend to spend more, contributing significantly to local economies.
- Modern Amenities: Wi-Fi is now considered the most important amenity by many campers, with 48% indicating its importance when choosing a campground. Additionally, 46% of campers use AI for trip planning, and 24% own electric vehicles, highlighting the need for EV charging stations at campgrounds.
- Wellness and Nature: A significant number of campers seek wellness experiences, with activities like forest bathing (83%) and water-based activities (70%) being popular. Millennials, in particular, report that camping boosts their emotional well-being.
These insights reflect a dynamic shift in camping and outdoor hospitality, emphasizing the importance of modern amenities, diverse experiences, and the growing economic impact of the industry.
